The classic north–south railway links many of Vietnam's most useful visitor stops.
Vietnam Train Travel Guide
Vietnam's railway is slower than flying, but it can turn the journey itself into part of the trip. Use it selectively for scenic daytime sections, overnight sleepers and easy city-to-city connections.
Best treated as an experience or broken into shorter legs rather than a time-saving transfer.
The Hai Van Pass section is one of the most memorable rail journeys in the country.
More privacy and comfort than a 6-berth sleeper for a long night journey.
Popular train legs for a Vietnam itinerary
These are planning ranges rather than guaranteed timetables. Always re-check your exact date before booking.
| Route | Typical time | Best use | Why choose it | Tickets |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hanoi → Ninh Binh | ≈ 2–2½ hr | Easy daytime hop | A practical rail leg for adding Ninh Binh after Hanoi without flying or taking a long-distance bus. | See Hanoi to Ninh Binh train tickets |
| Hanoi → Lao Cai | ≈ 7½–8 hr | Overnight | Useful for Sapa itineraries. The train ends at Lao Cai, followed by a road transfer up to Sapa. | See Hanoi to Lao Cai train tickets |
| Ninh Binh → Dong Hoi | ≈ 7–9 hr | Day or overnight | A useful north-to-central connection for travellers continuing toward Phong Nha. | See Ninh Binh to Dong Hoi train tickets |
| Hue → Da Nang | ≈ 2½–3 hr | Scenic daytime ride | Choose daylight if possible for views around Lang Co and the Hai Van Pass. Heritage services may also operate on this corridor. | See Hue to Da Nang train tickets |
| Da Nang → Nha Trang | ≈ 9–11 hr | Day or overnight | A long coastal section where a sleeper can replace a hotel night, while a daytime train gives more scenery. | See Da Nang to Nha Trang train tickets |
| Nha Trang → Ho Chi Minh City | ≈ 7–10 hr | Day or overnight | One of the more practical longer rail legs in southern Vietnam, with several possible departure times. | See Nha Trang to Ho Chi Minh City train tickets |
| Hanoi → Ho Chi Minh City | ≈ 32–36 hr | Full rail experience | Memorable, but flying is far quicker. Most first-time visitors will enjoy the railway more by splitting the route into two or three sections. | See Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City train tickets |

Which train class should you choose?
For most visitors, the decision is mainly about journey length and whether you need to sleep comfortably.
Soft seat
Air-conditioned reclining seats are usually the easiest choice for legs such as Hanoi–Ninh Binh or Hue–Da Nang.
Hard seat
The basic seating class. It can work for short legs, but most visitors will prefer soft seats for comfort.
6-berth sleeper
Six bunks in one compartment. It gives you a proper berth while keeping the fare lower than a 4-berth cabin.
4-berth soft sleeper
Four bunks in one compartment with simple bedding. This is usually the most comfortable standard Vietnam Railways option.
Hue → Da Nang through the Hai Van Pass
If you only take one short train journey in Vietnam, this is one of the strongest choices. Vietnam Tourism highlights the Hue–Da Nang corridor, and dedicated heritage services HD1/HD2 and HD3/HD4 have operated on this route. Check Vietnam Railways for the exact timetable on your date.
How to book Vietnam train tickets
The process is straightforward, but passenger details matter because the ticket is tied to your identity information.
Search the exact date
Timetables, train numbers and available classes vary by date. Search the route first rather than relying on an old timetable screenshot.
Choose the class for the journey length
Soft seats are usually enough for a few hours. For overnight travel, compare a 6-berth sleeper with a 4-berth soft sleeper.
Enter passenger details carefully
Vietnam Railways requires passenger identity details on the ticket. For international visitors, use the passport details you will carry when travelling.
Keep the e-ticket and matching ID
The identity document details should match the electronic ticket. Keep both accessible when entering the station and boarding.
Book earlier for busy dates
Sleeper berths and convenient train times can sell out around weekends, Vietnamese public holidays and peak travel periods.
Know the station name
Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City have central railway stations, while some destinations require an onward road connection. For Sapa, the mainline train arrives at Lao Cai. For Hoi An, the nearest useful mainline station is Da Nang. For Phong Nha, travellers commonly use Dong Hoi station.
Allow buffer time
Arrive with enough time to find your carriage and berth. If you are connecting to a flight, cruise or fixed-time tour, avoid building an itinerary that depends on a very tight train connection.
Journey times above are rounded planning ranges based on current 2026 schedules and official railway/tourism guidance. Always search your exact travel date before booking.
